I recently bought a Cohiba box pictured to the right, thinking it would make a great 3 string C B G ,Now let me explain,I live in a retirement area and although I alway fit electrics to my guitars I seldom use them,as I play mostly acustic. On recieving the box I find that the top is quite thick.Has any of you guys made a CBG from one like this and what is the sound like played unpluged.Mal (UK)

Hi Mal.
Cohiba boxes make great CBG's.
Naturally due to the thickness of the timber, they are not quite as resonate as many of the thinner mainly paper covered boxes, but still produce enough volume as an acoustic.
They have a fairly deep rich tone, but of course it also depends on what strings you use & the tuned length.
Do a search of youtube for "cohiba cigar box guitars" or similar, for a few sound samples.
Also depends on the volume of the box.....Cohiba make several different size boxes.
They are a great box to work with :-)
I like to use the back side for my sound board. After I have my sound holes cut and bracing in place I send it trough my drum sander a few times to get it approx. 1/8" thick. I think these boxes look and sound great.
I agree. IMHO Cohiba boxes are some of the nicest to work with. They are solid wood, so even though the top is somewhat thick it resonates better than plywood. The finger joints are well made and tight, so the box is sturdy. They have a good finish and if you want to remove the the lettering, it's just printed on and can be carefully wiped off with some mineral spirits.
Cohiba "Robusto":
One of my favorite 3 stringers for just picking around on unplugged. Forward sound holes and mid box bridge position, great projection.
It's a mandolin tailpiece. E-Bay & C.B. Gitty have 'em.
