If you're having trouble getting hold of wooden boxes it's definitely worth considering tins. My first build was a tin guitar and the sound was surprisingly good (well it surprised me anyway). Check it out at www.airburst.co.uk/junkboxinstruments

I guess choice of box comes down to your reasons for building an instrument - if you specifically want to build a CIGAR box guitar then nothing else will do, but if you want to build an interesting instrument with a unique tone then all sorts of things are possible. Frankly, it's worth experimenting with anything that might serve as a resonating body.

Cheers juju.

I ended up getting 2 lengths of oak cut out of an old table, 1200mm long, they planed it for me too, and when I told them what I was making they gave me them for free. Today is a good day.

Alright then everyone?

I've just decided to start making my first cigar box guitar. I've got hold of some 50 x 25 planed oak, which I thought was a bit of a bargain at £1.50 a mtr. Cigar boxes on the other hand are a much harder to come by. I was thinking about using an old jewelry box (and hope that the mrs doesn't notice) or an old wooden craft box. What does everyone thing to this?

good idea! I've already got a black cat's bone for the bridge and some bat's teeth tuning pegs. Now where did I put that black eyeliner....

Cool Anthony. How about spinning your own strings out of tarantula silk too?

Talking about other types of boxes that can be used, I have just got hold of a coffin shaped wine bottle box for a couple of quid on ebay. I'm going to call it "The Widowmaker" and play nothing but goth-blues on it.

Iv bought a few boxes from a kindly American brother and even with the shipping, it didnt work out much more than what you pay here... and they are GOOD boxes! Bigger than ours, thicker walls, cooler designs... look on Ebay too, most guys selling boxes will ship over here. £10 for a good US box delivered to your door? Yes please :o)
It pays to keep an open mind too - try wine boxes, antique cutlery boxes, tool boxes... hell, anything with 'box' in the name!

I think someone mentioned earlier that Ted Crocker had offered to ship a load over at minimum cost. Why don't one of you take him up on the offer?

As I've mentioned before - seek out the old fashioned tobacconist shops, there are still some around the country, ask if they have any or if not can they save them for you. I pay between £1-£2 for them this way.

If you can't find any use metal bisuit or chocolate tins, they have a mild natural reso sound to them.
