I bought a nasty looking guitar in a charity shop and thinking of chopping the body down to a rectangle and cladding it with rusty metal, copper etc to make a steampunk guitar. Question is, will the metal affect the magnetic pickups? Can't see why it should other than it might affect the magnetic field around the pups and maybe weaken the output. Any thoughts on it guys and gals?

Here's a photo of the nasty bugger. Sounds pretty good on the humbucker when open tuned and played as slide guitar

mount the p/u's on brass plate's, no magnetic interferance then, age them with vinegar and leave them out in the rain for a few day's,
what do you mean "nasty looking" smojo? That's one HONEY of a guitar! And the colour didn't make me feel sick. Not even a little bit...
I think I need to start giving my guitars cool names like 'The Rockmaster Phantom'. What a name!

ps. I know nothing about electronics or magnetic pick ups.
HOLY SHIT!!!!!! turn that colour down for gods sake, nearly burned my pupils. Get that copper on there as soon an possible, for the sake of all of our eyes !!!! LOL
I hear that the chap who designed this guitar later went on to become a painter and decorator in the Walsall area of Birmingham.

You may have seen some of his other work at a place called 'ThePublic'......
By the way, it'll be fine.

Remeber the cigarboxateers 1st rule though;

Try it. If you wake up in hospital, it went wrong somewhere.....
Thanks everyone. Some ideas starting to form. I want it to be a real steampunk guitar when finished - the complete opposite of what it is now. Might keep the name Phantom Rockmaster though. Trying to decide ona shape - maybe not rectangle CBG shape after all. Might be something like the 1960s VOX Phantom or maybe something like Joihn Mayall's early chop-job. Like the idea of copper/brass, maybe use some of that around central area near the pups and some tin can metal in other places. Might involve some soldering, pop riveting. Thinking it might be cool to add a Bigsby type trem wammy bar if I can get one cheap enough. Got some pieces of leather I might work into it somehow. Might cut some holes right through and put some windows in with something weird inside. It'll be a while before I get time to start it but in the meantime if you have any cool steampunkish ideas for it please post 'em here.
Hi Smojo,

Have you checked out the Steampunk groups here and at the Clubhouse?

just thought, telecaster bridge p/u is set in a steel plate, does'nt affect it, go for it,

Of course yes thanks. I'm trying to age some brass. Someone suggested peeing on it and leaving for a while. Didn't work and I got some funny looks at the hardware store!

Tony Zemaitis made a living out of making metal fronted guitars.
