I built a second CBG, finished Monday night - I can't every do anything simply so I went with a knockoff of a pic I saw on this site recently.

It actually worked out really well! I didn't cut a sound hole but the resonance is so good I'm considering leaving it as is.

I need to pull the strings off and add the fret location markers - I got so excited as I was closing in on finishing it that I forgot those.

Tried my hand at doing a heel on the neck - I can see I need to work on my shaping, and allow myself a bit more patience on that task.
Can a box be too shallow?tag:www.cigarboxnation.com,2017-11-15:2592684:Topic:29839542017-11-15T14:06:29.596ZRichey Kayhttps://www.cigarboxnation.com/profile/RickFenn

I picked up two boxes for my first couple of attempts at CBG's; finished the first and I'm getting ready to start the second.

The box I got is nice and long, but it's a bit shallow - only 2" deep. I feel like it'll be an interesting build but I'm wondering if that maybe isn't deep enough to get good resonance?

I'm considering doing it as a neck-through, but ending inside the box rather than going all the way through at the bottom.

Thoughts?

Just finished first build; sadly, kinda disappointing results.

During the build I wobbled between "just make the dang thing" and "this is going to be the most beautifulest ever!". So instead of just going for a straightforward, simple build to get used to it, I ended up messing around with a lot more stuff than I probably should have.

Problems include buzzing on some of the strings; wonky fret height which is also creating buzz and bad notes on some frets; mushy tuning (string won't hold the tuning); the neck is slightly twisted from the body (imperfect bracing cut?). On top of it all I cut my bottom string while trimming the other strings...sigh.

If at first you don't succeed, right?
Neck lengthtag:www.cigarboxnation.com,2017-10-23:2592684:Topic:29658182017-10-23T09:12:55.184ZRichey Kayhttps://www.cigarboxnation.com/profile/RickFenn

I know there's an element of 'no rules' when building these things, but being realistic, what would be the longest neck you could feasibly have on a CBG?

And while I'm at it, what sort of length do you think is optimal? I read somewhere that 3ft should get you through the box, a full fret board and headstock. Plus I know you can have much smaller ones...is there any significant difference except the range available>

I'm trying not to get frustrated fooling with piezos and their placement on my git.

I've built one cbg (well, two...the first was a home built box disaster) and played for months with bad sound.

About a week ago, I posted about proper placement, etc. and got GOOD advice, I just cannot get the piezo to sound good. What's more is the tweaking takes away from actually playing the thing. Right now I'm addicted to playing.

Now, I understand cbg's are imperfect by nature and building/ playing an imperfect instrument is what draws me to this craft. I don't want perfect sound, I'll settle for decent. I also don't expect champagne sound on a PBR budget. When I actually learn to play fairly good and can get a decent sound I'll proceed further down to rabbit hole to building more and experimenting.

So now, I need help in determining which type of pickup is a natural progression from the disk piezo? I would like a simple setup basically: plug and play. I have rudimentary knowledge of electronics and can solder, if need be. I just need some assistance in choosing a pickup that sounds decent and doesn't break the bank.

Thanks in advance,

Hey Everyone!!
I am planning on building my first CBG in the near future, and am looking for some suggestions on the best way/easiest way that you have found to notch out the neck? I must admit that I possess very rudimentary "woodworking" skills, and am looking for a techique that wouldn't involve table saws of any sort, if possible. Anyone ever used a portable jigsaw?, coping saw?, dremel?...??? Any "tricks"? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks so much for any advice in advance!!

Amazing how some things that should be obvious are easily overlooked until they punch you in the nose.

I just finished my 2nd CBG; a fretted electric with piezo pickup. Thought it'd be cool to have the strings come up through the cover of the box a couple of inches behind the bridge. Worked great until I tightened the strings up. The tension on the strings tends to pull the box cover towards the head of the guitar. Worked great until I tightened the strings up. The tension on the strings tends to pull the box cover towards the head of the guitar. Tried temporarily clamping the cover on the sides, just to keep it from moving, but then it is actually separating the top panel of the cover from the sides.

You can kind of see what I am talking about in this picture.

I was thinking maybe just glue the box shut. But that won't work; I need to open it to change the strings!

Thinking I may just have to mount a tailpiece of some sort.
