Has anybody had experience with self importing tuners and other musical items from China or Vietnam? What has the import duty been if any? Vietnam and China are both countries well represented on ebay.

Hi.
Just a little feedback. I have done very well with chinese stuff from eBay, but recently I bought a set of strings from China. A set of 6 light electric ones for £1.14 just to see what they were like. How could you go wrong you might think. This is how. Strings are normally shiny. These are matt and grey looking. A brass slide would normally slide nicely over them. With these the slide grates and the strings are obviously wearing away at the brass (not burnishing but abrading). If you want to scrunch them up and use them as a kitchen scourer, fine. As strings, no way. Thought you might like to know.
check out suntekstore.co.uk,free postage, i bought a fully loaded 'strat' scratchplate-2 single coil,1 humbucker ,pots,knobs,5 way switch all in for £ 11.58 .i bought it just for the parts,i've used 1 pup and a vol pot ---sounds great. 14 days.
lots of other stuff for sale, not just guitar bits.
Hi Bob.
At least if you have to drive all over somewhere to not find something it might as well be San Diego. Try doing it in Slough (about 15 miles from where I live).

I have had lots of stuff from China (mainly HK) through eBay. Latest example. A solder sucker for 99p + 49p postage. I purchased it on the evening of 26th June (Sunday) and it arrived on 5th July (Tuesday). That's only 7 working days. Fantastic.
If anything is wrong they are the best at refunding. Their priority seems to be to give the best service possible. People are wary of buying from China but I have had much better experiences with the Chinese than I have with sellers from continental Europe (in particular Germany).
Just one point for UK makers. For some of the electronic stuff don't forget Maplin. I think the output jacks and piezos are as good if not better than many that I have seen, and cheaper too.
If you all are purchasing guitar parts, and need some Chinese words to break through the language barrier, you should check out my English/Chinese Glossary which is available on my other CBN discussion group - "Chinese/English CBG Cultural Interest Group". Here's the link to the glossary.
