I live in rural NC and I suggest not to be afraid to go into the new type Tobacco shops sprouting up all over & ask them what they do with their empty cigar boxes? I am trying this approach and will report back in a week as to how it is going. I have great hope!

Here’s an old one that you might have forgotten about? Wood Stain from a few Pantry items:

Coffee- (ground)

Oil-(food safe)

I took a shallow bowl, but a deep plate will also work & poured enough Oil to saturate the Coffee.

Mix them around evenly with your fingers.

Make sure your wood is smooth & void of all splinters before applying.

Apply in a rubbing motion, with the direction of the grain.

Let dry…

Let dry & wipe grounds off & repeat or finish with your favorite technique.

That’s it! Easy peasy, Old time simplicity! Here’s what I used:

Lee’s Dark roast Vietnamese Coffee

Trader Joe’s Premium Xtra virgin Olive oil

WOOD USED: POPLAR

Edit: I originally did this to show a twenty-something some simple old time techniques that really work?

Here’s what another application looks like- 2 in total, will most likely add a coat of the Olive oil I used to finish it?

FYI: harder woods are more resistant to this method & need more applications for darker colors, while soft woods yield darker colors?

This weekends flea market trip earned me a mini portable speaker, powered by a 9v battery and works as a great little amp ☺ oh and a brand new hdmi cable. Total cost zero pennies. Happy days

I seem to remember seeing a post somewhere (maybe facebook) about someone using fine nails as fret wire.
Any thoughts or has anyone tried it with success?

Sometimes we measure twice, cut once and we (meaning I ) screw up the cut out on the box for the neck on a really nice box. Well, your worries are over my friends. Carefully fix the opening-I use glue mixed with sawdust to fill in small errors and then I cut some trim from the inside of the box and add to the neck opening for a nice finished look! In this case I cut correctly, but tore the paper along the edge. This makes for a nice finished look - and it's free!

Simple string height gauge I made from those wood inserts from the inside of a cigat box. I cut them into a long triangular shape. Then I slide the tapered end under the string until I like the height, mark it, and make a bridge that height- simple as that!

I recently got into building & playing CBG's as a boatbuilder i am always looking for good timber & never pass a skip without having a good look!

Much to my surprise the sound is superb, clean between low & mid volume then rapidly dirtier as you push it. Its driving two big speakers at 30w a channel. Good job the workshop is soundproofed!

Got two CBG's nearly finished, a baritone with the neck cut out of a mahogany handrail from a demolished victotian department store. Second one has a pitch pine neck from an old water tank.

Apologies as I already posted this in Baritone, before realising it probably belonged in here.

My question is, I have a pile of 2x4 pieces from a recent project, I got a jigsaw, a tablesaw and a flat sander (not orbital). I want to join a bunch of 2x4 pieces together to make a body blank, I can get Titebond II by the gallon at the local hardware store. How do I prep the pieces? Just run them through the table saw for flat edges and clamp 'em all together? Do I have to use a special…

I have the neck already, but need a body for it.
