Especially if it won't turn off...

Am still moving forward with my first (and then second) 2x4/2x6 steel builds, but now am thinking about stretching a 2x6 to a baritone steel.

I need help with design parameters and math. I guess scale length should be about 29-30 inches, but what about the butt and tailpiece? Just use the 2x4 dimensions, and stretch the scale?

Now add to that a chromatic scale with diatonic marked with different color/material. Might work, might not.

I'm already thinking about #2. I'm thinking that will be a 2X6, more surface area for switchplates, decoration, junk, whatever. Probably a humbucker, maybe a challenge coin inlay. Just an upgrade from the beater 2x4 model. What I don't like is square headstocks with tuners in line, so I just drew this up. Feedback please?

Lastly, I'd like feedback on this idea.... I work a little bit of leather, and thought of a big slab of leather on the bottom, rough side out, as kind of 'non-skid' while holding/playing.

Thoughts?

Hullo all, I have made a lap steel 6 string, with humbucker pickup. Now I am in the early stages of learning to play it. In the past I have had a go at "normal" 6 strings, but arthritis in my fretting hand has put an end to that. No probs with 3 string CBG's though. I would appreciate any given advice to help me get a bit further down that track. Oh, one more thing, I have had a bit of a play with tunings and like open D (DADF#AD) Cheers to all, Peter

I was browsing around a thrift store in Dallas last weekend and came across a small (36") wooden ironing board with scissor legs. I didn't pick it up then, but got to thinking it could make an interesting lap steel. I went back yesterday in hopes that it hadn't been bought and there it was. And at half off the price. So, $3.50 to start building my first lap steel.

I have a nut, tuners are on the way unless I find some someplace else (daughter and I are hitting the antique malls and thrift stores this weekend). I have ideas for a bridge and tail piece. I have even thought of making my own pickup using an Altoids tin.

So many possibilities.

I can post pics when done or progress pics as I build.
