wish i  could say it was a manly tool like a table saw, but it was the drive wheel of a belt sander

well I would have to say that if I were to try a radius fingerboard any time soon, the hall of shame board here would be full with my post. And I am looking for cheap and easy to handle. And I would need to get the hang of fretting before attempting to use a scroll saw for it.

Scroll saw works great for a flat fingerboard.  Probably don't want to try it for a radiused fingerboard.  If you cut the slots before you add the radius, you just have to pick the slot edges up again later.  If you do it after the radius is added, you'll have trouble keeping an even depth on both sides.

Harb or Freight has a "Flush Cut Saw" that is a pull saw that is the right kerf for fretwork.  I find it an acceptable alternative, although a little flexible.  If you are going to do more than 2 or 3 fretted CBG, think about getting a scroll saw. It makes a great, fast way of cutting the frets (I can cut the frets in a typical neck in a couple minutes, where by hand it is a 15-30 minute job that is less uniform.)

Daddy MoJo has a youtube how to on the subject....

hope this helps,

The Dovetail Saw alternative meets specs on standard fret saw in all categories except that it cuts on the push stroke.  A real fret saw cuts on the pull stroke.  Makes it much easier to cut accurately.

I'm using the normal gauge fretwire from CB Gitty with that saw and it's a perfect press in fit.
