I was cleaning up my shop ... cutting up bits too big for my wood stove... Evidently ran past the pusher on my angle gilhooley... hit the thumb pretty square...  never touched the nail...

The mess I'm (trying) to work in.

Pushing the envelope until it explodes

I was making a 3 string for a VERY small lady, so I tried to make a very low profile neck for her tiny hands. All was going well until I tested the rigidity and discovered I had made a pretty good…Continue

Holy $%^! - Dude, that's one nasty belt sander injury! since I use a belt sander upside down in a vice, I am especially curious to know what went wrong - can you take me through how it happened as lesson in safety? I have often thought that those sanders are far more dangerous than they look.... I am careful not to wear loose fitting clothing when I am working with these power tools - I almost got my sleeve caught in my belt sander and I know that would have caused some serious injury. So far (knock on wood), my worst injury has been my broken toe but I didn't get that from a tool - just from accidentally kicking a metal A-frame guitar stand in my shop that got in my way when I was in a hurry.... and in my stocking feet (I hate wearing shoes).

I hope you are feeling better - I'd have needed a morphine drip for a week, and here you are back in the shop and ready to crank that thing up and make some music! You go, guy....

Best,
MM

Mark, it looks like you did more than flesh damage; it looks like you are missing a digit. Wow, I know that hurt. Be more careful, try not to loose anymore.

I am sorry it happened. I hope it heals alright. I use a hand held belt sander laid down in a vice, and I have never thought it was very dangerous. But after seeing your finger, I will respect it more.

LOL, that's my kind of craftsman.  Screw the half of finger I just lost, I gotta plug this damned thing in and see what it sounds like!

By god, I salute you and I'm tipping a glass of whiskey this very minute in memory of your nub.  As I hit the "Add Comment" button, I'm throwing back some Jim Beam.

matches my missing leg now.  not my fretting hand and not my strumming/picking hand as i don't know how to play anyway.  now i'll just develop my own style and write my own music.  may have to change my "stage name from big quig to "stumpy Q"  i already like the sound of it..  was right back in shop today and finished my first with ouo/tone/volume setup. can't wait till everyone is awaske tomorrow so i can plug it into my amp and make some noise with it.

I don't give a mouse's fart if you did it cooking a birthday cake.  The result is the same.  Only thing left for you to do now is teach a high school shop class and the circle will be complete.

All joking aside, I really hope that you don't find this impacting your day to day life too severely and that recovery is as swift as it can be.  I certainly don't hope that this was your fretting hand.
