Howdy. I just joined Good Wood and wanted to show you some of the wood I brought back from Hawaii. We were stationed there int he army from '94 - '98, and I got to gather several exotic species. Some of these species are endangered and can't be bought any more.
This wood is called Kamani. It's an endangered species that used to be commercially available, but no longer. This is part of a branch that blew down in my neighbor's front yard in a storm 1996, so it was legally obtained. I caught the engineers as they were cutting up the branch to toss it, and talked them out of a few chunks. Sadly, none of the logs I have are over 18" long or 13" diameter.
This is rough cut, straight from the chain saw.
Here's the back side of the same piece, which has been run over the jointer.
And a piece that has been sanded with 220, then sprayed with satin polyurethane - no stain at all.
The pictures really don't do it justice. The wood is so hard, dense, and curly, it really has a lot of flame to it after finishing. Hole that finished piece in your hand and move it around in the light, and it changes colors - the lighter streaks turn dark and the darker streaks turn light. It cuts, mills, and turns beautifully. It is so hard, it was used for mallet heads years back. The state of Hawaii is on a campaign to get commercial growers to plant and cultivate Kamani to bring it out of endangered status. I really hope they succeed.
Hi Folks.
I've just been given two teak doors and their frames. Anyone tried making a neck from teak? Hardwood is hard to find here in Ireland, we don't have the cold climate for the good stuff like maple, so reclaimed timber might be the way to go...
Hi all! I've been using maple for most of my necks, but the HDs here have stopped carrying it (Lowe's never did in this area). Anyone have a reasonable source for 1 x 2? I could use the red oak they carry but prefer the light color and closed grai of the maple.
Also, has anyone worked with "canary wood" ? How would it work for fretboard use?
