You can get battery packs that give a 5.5v supply via a USB socket - I don't know if that is the kind of thing you are looking for?

Thank you, guys. Yes, I tried searching but therenisnvery little on the USB issue. I like the 6 volt idea - I just might give that a try before the attempting the LM 317. I'd welcome any other ideas.

Some people have done it. (The search facility seems to work best if you search on the top right of the home page. If you do it with the forum or group search it often comes up blank).

I would think that most usb speakers are pretty inefficient (meaning a 9v won't last very long).  You would use an voltage regulator such as an LM317 to convert voltage.  How about a bigger 6 volt battery and skip the regulator, the speakers probably wont care......especially if they are cheap.

I'm thinking about hacking a set of USB computer speakers into a box- mounted amp running off a 9v battery. I am surprised to find very little discussion on the nation about this, so that leads me to wonder if it is practical. ( I've been looking around locally and on eBay for an old radio to hack like Beatlejuice has shown, but to no avail)

I understand that the USB probably runs at about 5v so I am wondering how to step that down from a 9v battery. Any advice would be appreciated since I have almost no electronics experience, but a sense of adventure.

yes p.s. = wall wart or ac to dc adapter , the boos ones , like i mentioned have the noise filtering built in . it very well could be that having it on breadboard is the issue . have you tried moving it ? also the input cable , is that a shielded wire ? i have done some breadboarding and they always are a bit noisy until they get boxed up . if it was me , i wouldnt spend TOO much time debugging it , rather get it boxed up , then hopefully it would be quiet , but you wont know until you try i spose .
