I bought this amp for $40 at a thrift shop. It sounded great till last night. I smelled something burning, and saw smoke coming out of it. I haven't looked closely but I figure it's a goner, but I'd like to at least salvage the cabinet and speaker. Would a CB Gitty amp kit be strong enough to power it? The speaker is about 8". My other thought was a Smokey amp head. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Uses 9volt & 12volt versions of the LM386 chip, 12volt version gives more clarity & headroom, but 9volt version doesn’t like 12volts so beware.....Battery switching is used, so remember to remove jacks when not in use? Possible mods= 1) Removing C3 & connect pins 1 & 8 for a less saturation, 2) Leaving pins 1 & 8 open will give it another dimension. It can also drive a speaker cab like the Smokey amp! Enjoy :)…

Hi All,

I have a query about an amplifier I have just acquired, a second hand Roland Cube X20 . It’s in really good condition and all it’s features work fine but when I plug in the jack, before it’s connected to the guitar, I get a distinct hum. This almost disappears when I hold the the other end of the lead - except if I touch the jack tip – then it really screams.

The hum also almost disappears if I touch any metal part of the amp.

When it’s connected to the guitar the hum is still there but not so obvious when it’s being played.

I don’t know much about amps or electronics but I feel that the amp may have an earthing issue. Then again, it might be quite normal. This is my first experience with an amp so I really wouldn’t know.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I'm building a mini half stack using a C.B Gitty amp kit. Now what I am wondering is can I wire the speaker leads to a jack in the head and then wire the speaker to a jack in the cabinet? Will that work or is there another way to go about it?

The only other device I could find reference for was a 2-track tape tube amp player. Oh well...

Fortunately, one of the cabinets has the original schematic attached, so I can work from that to re-build the tired old lady into a guitar amplifier.

It has 4 inputs and a selector switch for tuner, tape, phono, and TV. These will be kept intact and operational. I will add a 1/4" input jack and restore the tube amplifier so it can live on.

I'm in the middle of building an amp using a basic LM386 with a 10uF cap on pins 1 and 8 to increase the volume. It's OK, in fact good, but I want that little bit more, so I got the LM386 n-4 IC which says it'll give me 1 watt. It doesn't give me any sound at all.

Before I cut out the cap and mess with something that does work, can anyone please tell me if that cap mod works on all versions of the 386, have got a dead chip, or am I missing something…

I'm installing a Honeytone amp into an old speaker box and want to increase speaker size to a 6 or 8 inch. Any suggestion on how to achieve best sound? What would be a good speaker for this setup and where is the best place to purchase? Thanks for your help.
