Welcome to our Chinese/English Cigar Box Guitar Cultural Interest Group

Needless to say, most Chinese people have never heard or seen a cigar box, much less a cigar box guitar. However, the guitar and guitar music is very popular in China, especially with the younger generation. So, introducing them to cigar box guitars and related music is a natural extension of those interests. A major barrier is language, so one important part of this group will be to assist in translation. And this new version of the Ning software now supports Chinese characters as well as Pinyin, so providing word lists, translator tools and the like will now be possible. I'll start things by providing some useful word lists, and we'll see how it evolves from that.

Lesson one:  How to say "Cigar Box Guitar" in Chinese

                             Chinese Characters             Pinyin (phonetic alphabet)

cigar box guitar      =  雪茄盒吉他                     =  xuě jiā hé jí tā

where:

    cigar = 雪茄 = xuě jiā

    box = 盒 = hé

    guitar = 吉他 = jí tā

Good news. For about the last 3 weeks access to Ning-based web sites, including Cigar Box Nation, had been blocked in China. This corresponds to a couple of events, the unrest in Egypt and Chinese New Year vacation, so I'm not quite sure the reason the site was blocked, but this morning I find I can access it again. Yeah!

Hi Mr. Burgess.

The next time you are in the region, let me know and maybe we can meet up. I'd love to see someone play the CBG as well as you do. My elementary playing skills really doesn't do these instruments justice. The next time I'm in the States, I be sure to download a bunch of CBG videos (both 'training'  'performance' videos) onto CD and take them back with me to China. I guess some of them I could re-post on a video server in China, assuming their owners agree. That should help fire up the interest in CBGs here. In fact, I may have a few video from my last visit, that I could upload. Let me check into that and contact the CBN members who made the videos for permission.

Very interesting. I just returned from a 15 day trip to Guangzhou. I am also a Tai Chi / Chi Kung instructor and went for further training. I didn't bring an instrument on this trip. Unfortunately, as you may know, youtube cannot be accessed in China, so videos would need to be posted via another site. Of course, for domestic communications this is not a problem to reach out to the Chinese speaking community. Thank you for your efforts.

Hi All.

I put a message up on a message board at http://hexun.com/tanjita, one of probably dozens of guitar oriented message boards in China. I will try this some more in coming weeks to see if I can get some folks there interested this way. Let me know if you have come to this site from some Chinese message board.

Here's a machine translation of what I said:

大家好。

我把留言板留言就在 http://hexun.com/tanjita,吉他为主的几十个留言板可能在中国一。我会尽力在未来几周内,看看我是否有兴趣可以得到这样一些人一些这方面的更多。让我知道,如果你来到这从一些网站的留言板中。

Here is an artical written in Chinese about Cigar Box Guiitars. It should be of interest to those people visiting this site who are fluent in Chinese.
