ENTRY #7
Ok.. Here is my entry,I call it 4 one reason is obvious the other reason is it is my 4th real build. every thing has been salvaged from different sources and the only power tool I used was a drill(unless you count a hot glue gun) It plays very well and believe it or not you can hit a golf ball with it. I kept that in mind during the build and made sure it was tight and solid.
Parts list
trashed box
2 drivers 1 whole one broken(anger issues?)
tees used as nut, bridge and hold down
screws, nuts and bolts from old cabinets
busted screen door screen for sound hole protection
headphone used as pickup in body
spice jar top to hold pickup
box supports from scrap pile
duct tape(from a duck)
I refinished the box with sandpaper and a file cause it was not ugly enough for me. Hope it fits the criteria.
ENTRY #5
Tobacco Can Berimbau.
I've become rather fascinated by some of the weird tones I've heard out of these instruments and not having any gourds lying about and a abundance of tobacco cans, figured I'd take a swing at one for my entry. The stick is a limb off an apple tree I had to cut down, the wire is the bead wire from an old radial tire(that I did recycle afterwards)...in Brazil this is apparently called making an 'arame'...the whole thing behind the Berimbau is pretty interesting...pitty I don't speak Portuguese and understand the martial arts stuff. The can is well a can of tobacco I smoked, used a piece of a blown out Mt Bike tube at the top(thing is pretty hard to string actually lotta tension). I have this huge spool of twine from a coffee roastin plant that was more or less destroyed after Katrina... and some scrap clothes line...not sure where it came from. The wooden dowel 'striker thing' came of a busted childs beach chair I saved pieces of for some reason years ago. And the rock came out of a planter on the deck.
Having no clue really about the instrument...I tell ya it's pretty darn cool...wish I'd used an all metal can now...think it'd resonate better. Bugler and top cans are kinda cardboard now days. But definitely interesting tones and rather challenging to play(the whole using a rock as a bridge requires some coordination).
I'll definitely play with building another at some point.
ENTRY #4
Here is my entry I started this build using a First Act Strat copy I found at tne Salvation army for $40. I quickly tore it apart for all the usable parts and just let my imagination run wild. I used the neck ,2 of the pickups and strings and pups and all the electronics out of the F/A after that I started looking through my mass junk boxes found some copper pipe , old tail lights from a car , old RC car parts. My wife gave me some jewelry and a compass her company gave her as a leader award. I also got an old shoe horn from the Salvation army and used that as the arm rest and leg stop for this build.I painted the white knobs black and added gold into the lettering Hope you like it

ENTRY #3
HI folks, here's my entry. I actually started this build a couple weeks ago with the intention of using whatever parts I had lying around and then i heard about the contest, great timing!
Neck was made from 3 pieces of 1x2 poplar leftover from another build
Tuners and bridge bottom piece from a broken Ovation neck. (Ever seen that before?) :)
Body was made from two different cigar boxes and a piece of a clementine fruit crate.
Pup and string retainers from a old clock radio. Took the transformer out dissassembled it and stuck 4 pole pieces and magnet from an old tele pup.(Magnet is under the top cover). Works ok - could use a bit more output.
***note from Shane Speal: I edited GB's post so that the picture is viewable with the description, making it easier for judges to see the whole entry at once.***
ENTRY #2
I found an old axe handle in the trash..I carved an axe head out of a piece of wood and glued it onto the handle..Then mouted some old throw away tuners, 3 strings, a piezo and jack and came up with a musical walking stick..When I get tired of walking I can sit down and play away awhile..Then when I get next to an amplifier watch out..I can attract all the cats in the neiborhood..
ENTRY #1
Joseph Allen Popp's lap slide...
I pulled the three pieces of wood that this is made of out of the dumpster at an organ supply company. One day years ago I found the "fretboard", which sits 1/2" below the strings, shoved in my door, left there by an unidentified visitor as a calling card. I knew I'd find a use for it eventually. I painted it red and yellow and stuck on some musical note stickers. The "bridge" is simply a huge screw I had in my basement, and it sits on a splinter of wood used to elevate it a little off of the body. The tuners are taken off of a cheapo beater guitar, which is long gone. The nut is fashioned from a small piece of rosewood I had laying around. The pickup is a Bill Lawrence acoustic guitar soundhole model, which I wedged between the tailpiece end block of wood and a few screws I screwed into the body. The tailpiece is a reappropriated chrome tailpiece taken from another cheapo guitar, also long gone. It's screwed onto the bottom side edge of the instrument.
When I went to build this baby, I started with the fretboard, which is used only as a visual reference for where to hold the slide...just like most lap slide guitars. Since the scale length was dictated by the fretboard, I had to screw the two hunks of wood on each end of the istrument to make the body long enough for the 25 1/2" scale length. It turns out that this is really good tone wood, which makes sense since I grabbed it from an organ supply company dumpster. When A/B'd against three vintage Gibson lap slide guitars owned by a friend of mine, this sucker blows all three of his out of the water. I attribute this to the extended scale length of my home-made, and the Bill Lawrence pickup.
Hope you like it. I also hope I win this contest!
Thanks,
Joseph Allen Popp
