I've gotten so accustom to working in a mess that it just doesn't seem to matter anymore.  Still, it would be nice to reclaim my workbench, but I just don't have any room to hang or store my tools and other items.  How about it, do you work among a clutter of tools and the odds and ends of projects?

i'll  be  no  help  ,,,,,  i  can't even   find my workbench  . :-/

:o)  I'm getting to that point.  I find myself piling stuff to the side to make room.

Must show this photo to my beloved, someone who is more untidy than me

I don't see a problem here.
Umm... That's pretty nice. You even have room for a coffee cup.

The more places you have to store things. The more places you have to look to find  where you stored them.

Put some peg board and hangers behind your screw drivers. Then store the things you grab the most there. Other than that? Rock on dude!

There are cans of paint under the bench, paint from projects around the house.  I have given some thought about discarding some of the older stuff.  Finding a place for my hand drill, hand sander and circular saw is an issue.  I do have a peg board, but that is completely used.  As it is, my work area occupies a bit less than 1/4 the garage.  I have nowhere to expand my area.  My family owns most the garage with their stuff in storage.

Cars!?  There's no room for cars in my garage.  As for using the rafters, good idea, but the ceiling is sheet rocked.  I think that if I can unload some paint, I might have room for my power tools under the bench.  Yet I have a lot of other stuff that needs a home in the shop.  Weekend project.

Move to a place with a bigger space! LOL. I have a wide, short file cabinet under my bench where I can store drill, wood scraps, boxes with parts and such. I don't actually build on my bench, I use a folding table that I put up and down with each build session. I also have a tall file cabinet that holds some other tools, sandpaper, drill bits, etc. I pile up the prospect cigar boxes on the tall file cabinets awaiting use. This may not be helpful to you in your small space, but it helped "enlarge" my space so that Mrs. Grandpa can put her car in at night. I also have my drill press, saw, router mounted on rolling stands so I can move them off the wall to an open spot inside or outside the garage. Here in So. Cal. we do enjoy warmer drier so-called winters that allow outdoor wood working most of the time. Putting wheels on the tools and stands makes working/storing much easier for me. But it doesn't actually create square footage. Again, sorry that this may not be helpful for your space, but maybe there will be a nugget of help for you or others.

The upper right corner of this pic seems to show a lot of unused wall space where pegboard and/or shelves could go, and if the rest is filled with family storage, how about shelves over there to reduce the footprint of storage, or move the storage to the rafters?  I added a pull-down ladder to my garage for just that, it was a great investment in time and money, got a lot of floor space cleared up moving the storage above head.

Yeah,  I've given that space some thought.  It's a little awkward to access--that's generally where I park my table saw when not in use.  I'm looking at going through my shelves and tossing the stuff that I know I will never use again.  A lot of it is various paints and things that were purchased for specific projects, but I've yet come to need them again.

My workspace is very similar to yours. My solution for tools is a large rolling toolbox, but pegboard is your friend.

Wayfinder is right, a good multi tip screwdriver is all you really need. My workbench looks like yours, and I end up cleaning up an area just to work and make it a mess again. IMHO, the trick is to have a defined spot for everything, and. Have it conveniently located. Your back wall looks like a good place for shelves to hold boxes, stacks of necks, glue, paint, whatever. I found small (6" tall) bins at the dollar store. One for glues, one for finishes/solvents. I use small 8oz squeeze bottles I found at Harbor Freight to store working quantities, the rest are in a flammables cabinet... That saved me a lot of space and makes it much more convenient. As far as hardware, I have two of these: http://t.harborfreight.com/19-bin-portable-parts-storage-case-93928... the squeeze bottles: http://t.harborfreight.com/pack-of-3-8-oz-storage-bottles-with-twis...

It took me about three months to develop the discipline to put my drill press chuck key in the same spot so I don't spend hours looking for it every time...

Good luck!
