To celebrate the launch of my site, and in conjunction with my old mate Nigel McTrustry from cigarboxguitarsaustralia.com, I'm running a competition in which you can win one of Nigel's amazing instruments. Here's the go:

  • Go to my website www.learncigarboxguitar.com and take the link to the SongBook
  • Pick a song and figure out how to play it. You may already know how to play it, you can use my version or figure it out for yourself, it's up to you.
  • Record a video of yourself playing the song on a cigar box guitar. You can play it solo or grab a band but you do have to prominently feature a cigar box guitar.
  • On or after the 1st of April (no, it's not a joke) upload your video to Youtube and register on my site.
  • On the 1st of June (that's two months) the video with the most views is the winner, no correspondence blaah blaah

There's a sample on youtube already https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtzpaA_p7Js

Full competition details are here http://www.learncigarboxguitar.com/winaguitar

  • Let me see if I've got this right:  I have to already have a cigar-box git in order to win one?  How does that expand your customer base...or, for that matter, the universal fellowship of three-string cigar-box guitar players?  Just curious.  Thanks!  Tom  (PS - I'm interested in trying to play three-string stuff on a guitar or uke, or maybe on my Dobro, but that doesn't fly, right?)

    • I'd thought of asking people to video themselves playing a hammered dulcimer but that didn't sit right.

Your P.S. You can use a use similar approach regardless of how many strings on your instrument, it's a matter of understanding the tuning.

  • Great idea, but I think you'll find that almost all of those songs are under copyright. That means recording them and posting them on the internet constitutes copyright violation, unless you have clearances for each song.

The licensing organizations may or may not find you big enough to take down, but I wouldn't be surprised if they nab you. Have you looked into all this? Best of luck!

    • Thanks Slim. I know that my SongBook is OK because they are my interpretations of 3 string slide versions of chord progressions, can't copyright that. As for the performances, youtube is full of them but I'll chase that up, thanks.
