Hey guys,

Its been awhile since I posted here been real busy with school and such and I am now taking some time off and would like to build a Double Bass out of a wheelbarrow. I have found various plans online some using a wheelbarrow and others building all the parts and I have decided on the wheelbarrow bass which do you think would be best a plastic body or a metal one. I plan to use it in Jazz and rockabilly. Advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated

  • I build one with a metal wheelbarrow. It sounds great but weighs 35 pounds. the weight is the ONLY thing i don't love about it.
  • I spotted a childs wheelbarrow at a flea market just the other day. Thought that would be cool as a small bodied, electric, stand up bass. Cut off the handles, but leave the wheel on and use that as the bottom. When you stand it up, the wheel would be off the floor.

  • Metal should resonate better and if weight is a problem, leave the wheel on it and you can just roll it around.

    • The plans that I have have the rounded part as the top putting the wheel in the way but i'm probably going to put a locking caster wheel on the endpin so i can roll it around and lock it when in use

  • Well, since it's for jazz and rockabilly, the obvious choice would be...Metal!
    • Thats what I planned on using I was curious to know if anyone knew the difference in sound other than that my only concern was the weight difference but if necessary I could use a slightly smaller wheelbarrow and the best part is that weed whacker string comes in the same gauges as the actual bass strings
