What does A' mean?

Sorry for the noob question, but in a PDF file I have, it refers to tuning the strings and it shows an A'. I know #=sharp, and b=flat, but what does a ' designate?

  • Cool. Thanks!!!
  • That's one way of showing that that A is an octave up from another A in the tuning rather than in unison with it. Then you could have A'', A''', A'''' for 2, 3, and 4 octaves if you were tuning a really wide ranging instrument.
