Looking for some ideas on machine heads/ tunning keys. Doing a custom build for a guy that does not want any chrome or brass or white tunning keys. He asked if I could make them out of wing nuts. Does anyone have some suggestion ? Thanks,

  • Are these primitive  enough? Simply whittled from some oak scraps...and they do actually hold the tuning.

    • Wow John, those are quite impressive ! He wanted a industrial look. Used the wing nut method described above. However, wish I would have gone with Bluesheart suggestion about brazing a wing nut to a machine head. Tuning the eye bolt/ wing nut deal is not my thing. Then again it's not my axe to grind :-). Thanks for all the help guys !

  • You can use bolts and wing nuts. Another nut and lock washer can be used to keep the wing nut tight and will add to the industrial look.

    • THe down side is they will be a pain to work with. You could also braze or epoxy wing nuts to geared tuners like the ones Gitty sells. Then you would have the look but they will also work well.

  • I use Crow's eyebolt method on about half my builds.  Works great.   Note that they are sensitive, because of their big diameter.  A small twist causes a big change in pitch.
