I am sure this topic has been debated quite often, but could I get a list of the best types/brands of boxes to make CBGs with?

I am interested in a larger/deeper one that has minimal paper glued to it. I would like some labels, or even better, wood-burned or inscribed insignia indicating cigar brand, but as little glued-on paper as possible.

If the box was rectangular, as opposed to square, that would be best, and with a large soundboard/face size as well as a decent amount of depth.

Finally, if you could suggest a good source for these where they can be bought as cheaply as possible, that would excellent.

I know, I know: this is probably the MOST common type of request for information builders could have, but I would really appreciate your help.

thank you,

KK

  • My latest build was made from a discarded drawer and covered top and bottom with a piece of doorskin. Did'nt cost anything except for the screws and glue!

  • Hi KK,

It's also pretty easy to build your own boxes and not be restricted by the dimensions of available cigar boxes. You could then come back and decorate them as you please using wood burner tools, or a number of other finishing techniques. My CBN discussion group talks a lot about box building: Home Made Resonator Boxes 101, v.2.0.

This box is pretty large and deep and has good acoustic properties. The shop where I get my boxes seems to have empties often so should be available at most shops. sides and top are sturdy but not too thick.

  • don't  discount  the  use   of a double wine  box   ;-)

    • Thanks!

Do you use these often? I assume you would just get them from a wine shop?

  • Google a near by cigar smoke shop stop in and ask I find they cant get rid of them fast enough some times a couple bucks. If ya ask nice they may hold a certain one for you if they are cool. Take a look around the humidor that's where I get a lot of Ideas. Then when ya see one ya like just ask they are usually laid back at the cigar shop.
