I like a vintage/relic look but think these might be pushing it too far. Any thoughts on cleaning these up, or should they remain dust collectors on a back shelf in my shop?

T-gripped, those both look very usable to me, I'm sure many here would volunteer to take them off your hands (dibs!) A friend recently told me of a derusting trick which I am intrigued with but haven't yet tried - he soaks rusty parts in a solution of ten parts water to one part molasses for 2-3 weeks and says it works great. In your case I'm not sure you want to remove all of the rust (character) but rather just clean them and stabilize the rust. Products are on the market for stabilization, I'd use that after a good cleaning/degreasing and build with them. The stabilizers typically turn the rusty areas a full black and the surface can be painted afterwards (clear coat)

I do believe those are vintage “patina” that is probably impossible to recreate.   And some may have these treasure around the garage, but that would be difficult for me to find in my area.   I like the rust

I'd say the later. Perfectly fine as-is!

The trick here is to build an instrument around that patina that matches/compliments it. Aged and worn, vintage looking, but deceptively playable would be my goal. I dig it!

definitely usable, i'm looking at building a motorbike plate cbg with a 6x9in box.  haven't seen too many done.

Finished the LPG this morning. The whole world is dealing with the pandemic right now, but here in middle Tennessee we are also still in the throes of tornado recovery. I am going to try to sell this for $130 and donate the entire amount to a relief fund for my community.
