I've searched the site here and have found reference to Krylon (or other brand) clear coat enamels, but has anyone thoughts on using spray enamel colors like Krylon on CBGs? I'm going to use a clear coat in any case. Thought is for coloring the neck. I probably won't use acrylics tho as they seem to be more plastic in feel. Polyurethane is out of the question for me on necks as the one I did first seems a little sticky.

Thanks all.

I just made one and I painted the back of the neck with gloss black Krylon, and then covered it with Minwax polyurethane. Once it dried completely, it didn't feel sticky at all to me.

used krylon spray paint on this dowel neck worked just fine
Say what? really? Now I can see where humidity might do that and in my case sweat or perspiration/heat from my hand.

Hmmm Interesting. Thanks Ottie.

weather conditions can cause poly to get sticky, when this happens you can harden it by washing the area with ice water just put some ice in a pan of water and wet a old tee shirt and wrap it around the area this is sticky you may have to do it more than once or twice but it will work
Great thoughts guys, I'm getting a better feeling for this finish then. I'll try it and see.
I've had good luck with krylon and also laquer if your clearcoating a box with nice labels. The key is patience-let it dry a few weeks ahead of time. I've thought about clearing a bunch of my boxes before even working on them so I'm ready to go.
DO NOT USE CLEAR ENAMEL.

Red Dog would tell you this too. Enamel looks really good when you spray it on but it never hardens up the way you need it to and will take an impression off of anything (also softens up again in too much heat). Use gloss finish lacquer. The end result is indistinguishable in looks from enamel but cures properly and takes way more punishment.
Oh yeah Josh, no, I use shellac or some other lacquer. I have used Minwax polyu on necks but that seems to make my hands stick to the neck a little -- even after months of drying.

Plus, I like to work the final coats by hand. Spray the colors, yeah, but not the final coats.

Thanks!!

My latest has spray enamel (black) on the neck, but not the fingerboard. Just put two coats of shellac on the body (Partagas black label) and that looks like it is going to work well. I was going to use ebony stain on the neck, which is from a kids guitar from the thrift shop, but found after sanding off the factory finish that there was what looks like bondo on the neck and stain will not work on that! The paint was a little tacky for a while but seem to have dried now that it's been in the AC for a few days.

This may be a stupid question or covered elsewhere, but does the lacquer finish go on before the paint, or afterward?
Clear coat type lacquer would go on after if then. That depends on the color paint you use.

Oh and let me complement you Scotty C! Researching your need before you post a new discussion. If you have to post a new discussion, now you have something to add new.

Thank you!

And thank you for the compliment, Wes. (I was worried last week I was making a nuisance of myself by posting too many threads here.)

I don't want to hijack your post, but I am a bit of a space-case on painting/finishing. The StewMac web site is riddled with different finishes & aerosols, which makes it confusing for a n00b. Does the fingerboard get lacquered with the rest of the neck, or is that more of a tung oil rubdown instead?
