Tech problem bringing up CBN.

Tech problem bringing up CBN. Hi all_ I hate to start off this way but I'm having a real hard time with the CBN site. When I bring up the CBN Home Page my computer hangs up each and every time, before I even click on any option, the only way I can get out of the page is to hit Clr,Alt,Del or click on EXIT "X" which will bring up an error message that says "Explorer Is Not Responding" and I can click on "End Task" which will clear the page from my computer. For awhile I was just using the "Picture" category option and it was working well until tonight when I tried to access it, then just like the CBN Home Page when I brought it up it hung up my computer over and over. I finally managed to get to the CBN "Sign Up" page via one of your members discussion pages long enough to sign up but after activating my membership through the email I was sent I still can not access the Home Page or any of the options like the forum or Pictures, etc... I'm trying to get this information into a discussion here so you know what's going on but I'm not sure that it's going to work, I can only hope that it does. My intent was not to sigh up at CBN, I'm a rather bad guitar player but I do some woodworking and you all have inspired me to build a Cigar Box Guitar of my own because of all the great looking builds I see you doing. Anyway, have you any suggestions on what the "Computer Hang" problem could be caused from, it only is occurring with this site and strikes me as very odd as I go to much more resource intensive sites than CBN, it acts almost like my ISP number is being blocked once I bring any page at CBN up and try to click on anything on the menue. Any HELP you could give would be appreciated as I really have enjoyed CBN since finding it about a month ago. Thanks, Lou.

I'm glad that Firefox saved the day for you.

Looks like a cool build! You should be able to get away without fastening the bridge to the lid, as the string tension should hold it in place.

Thanks, that business with the constant hang up was a PITA big time.

    Re: Bridge, floating or not?

I thought about leaving it loose but then got to thinking of how I could fasten it to the box without gluing it in place permanently.

I decided to imbed small machine screws into the bottom of the oak blocks leaving them long enough to go through the box beside the neck and just clear the neck so I can use a 1/2 " metal strip to cross the neck fitting into a notch just wide enough for it, then I can lock it down with nuts & washers and add a drop of lock tite to the threads to keep them from backing off.

If ever the need arises I'll be able to remove the nuts and bridge fairly easily.

    Cheers,

    Lou.

  • Yup, your right on all counts Ted, it seems that the CBN site has some type of media within it that is conflicting with my IE browser, so, I downloaded the Mozilla Firefox browser and PRESTO, I get no more hanging up at CBN, everything loads and works just fine.

Our local computer guy "Rick" said that it's a good thing that we installed Firefox if the computer was starting to hang up,he also said that we should not have anymore trouble like this using the Firefox Browser but we can still use IE if we want to as long as it is working well on other sites.

I'm glad this hang problem has been resolved because I really do enjoy the CBN site very much and just to show you how you all have inspired me to build my own Cigar Box Guitar I'm going to attempt to upload a few pictures of my build still in progress but coming along nicely.

    Here goes,.....

My first build of a Cigar Box Guitar using Perdomo cigar box and 11 year old red oak.

Decided on this shape for the headstock of my cigar box guitar, it seemed to go with the cigar box.

The position markers on the fully fretted neck of my cigar box guitar are leather rivets.

The bridge of my cigar box guitar (not yet attached) is made from a # 8 nail and two blocks of red oak.

Yup,yup, there it is, my first attempt at building a Cigar Box Guitar, it's going to be wired for two piezo pick ups under the lid.

Still got to do the sound holes as well then touch up the dings and finish it.

  • Thanks guys_ So far this Forum page seems to be loading ok and I have not had any problems using it (SO FAR) but I still can not bring up the Home Page or the Photo section without it hanging and making it impossible for me to do anything on those pages, it's really strange.

I have tried everything, deleting the temporary Internet files / cookies / cache / I've run my anti-spyware and anti-'virus programs, even tried a deep disc clean up but nothing seems to keep the CBN Home Page / Photo section from hanging my machine, it's very frustrating as I stated prior, It is only happening here at CBN.

My security setting is set at Medium so that should be ok, I just do not get what's causing this.

If it was my browser it would surely be acting up at news sites like MSNBC, CNN, my banking and credit card sites, etc...but it is acting fine at those resource intensive sites, so if it is my browser this is the first problem I've encountered with it at any site.

I'm going to have a chat with my computer guy here locally tomorrow, maybe he can solve this annoying glich I'm running into.

Thanks again for your response to my dilemma, I hope to continue to enjoy CBN, it's a great site with great folks.

    Cheers,

    Lou.
  • What Tres said, plus - make sure you're using the latest (at least recent) version of either browser. I prefer FireFox, and it works great here. Ning does some funny things with the older browser versions. There's always a spyware / adware possibility shooting you a bunch of re-direct crap that will hang up IE, Windows Defender is good and free,( for XP or Vista) as bad as I hate to praise anything coming from uncle bill...
  • Lou, I'm afraid I don't know anything specific that would explain what you see. I can suggest a couple of things you could try which might clear the problem up:

    - Try deleting all cookies related to cigarboxnation.com or ning.com.

    - Try clearing your browser cache.

    - Try running a different browser (Firefox if you usually run IE, or vice versa).
