Hi, I just got a CBG and it's got what looks like a little silver covered humbucker. It's strung with acoustic strings. The output on the bass strings is not as loud as the treble strings. I was wondering, this being a magnetic pickup, if electric guitar strings would work better? I've heard that acoustic strings aren't as magnetic as electric strings because of the composition of the metal used.

  • think of a magnetic pickup as a generator (because thats all it is) when you pluck a string it vibrates causing the magnetic field to move. when the magnetic field moves across the coil of wire it generates a/c electricty that happens to be at the same frequency as the string vibrates at. now acoustic strings are ususaly wound with bronze the bronze wont affect the magnetic field so only the much smaller core is moving the field thats why you have a weaker singal. electic guitar strings are made of a iron alloy that allow them to get the most out of a pickup.
  • Thanks for the replies. No, there are no adjustment screws showing and no surround. I'll go with different strings. Thanks again!

    Hi,

I agree with the above but also if the pickup is in the usual humbucker pickup surround like this

you can easily raise or lower both sides of the pickup via the screws halfway down either side. You could try lowering the treble side or raising the bass side to match up the outputs.

  • i agree with what jim said cause i have found this out from experience way back in my younger days. i choose a preference of nickel alloy strings for humbucker set ups.
  • you heard correctly
