I cruised thru Home Depot yesterday and then in the "hardwood" section of mostly oak and poplar, there was some 1x2 by 12foot maple and right on top of a stack of otherwise very plain boards was this single piece of "ribbon" highly figured maple...  enough for 4-6 necks or three times as many fretboards, it was an amazing buy at $0.94 per foot.

You can't always score like this, but it's worth the occassional lookie-see.  BTW, today, encouraged by yesterday's score, I picked up a 1X4 by 12 foot piece of maple at another Home Depot that was loaded with "birdeyes"...

the best,

  • I love maple.....bacon..........syrup
  • I suppose I could find some in larger boards in the shelving section. I'll have to look.

  • I (personally) hate red oak for any type of project being the large open grain and poplar is sooooo same-ol-same-ol. I do make a lot with poplar, don't get me wrong, just kinda the 'southern yellow pine' of hardwoods.

Other than that, nothing _wrong_ with it. I prefer maple or some other hard woods if I can get my hands on some.

  • If I can remember right, most of the big red pines where down around the Lake Conway area, Edgewood and Pine Castle too. Seems the early settlers of O-town brought them trees in back in the late 1800's when it was becoming a popular settlement.
  • Whats' wrong with red oak and poplar? Actually, in Orlando, there are several residents who have Australian red pines all over that place. Most these pines are close to 100 years old or more, if you find someone who is dropping one of those, ask for some long cuts before they hack'em into small chunks. The red pine is a very hard wood and has almost like a self petrification going on. Good hunting, I spent nearly 20 years in the O-town during my youthful years, 8-) Maximo
  • You suck Sam.

Nah you don't. I only _wish_ my local HD had maple strips. Ted C told me that they get maple up north. Down here, poplar and red oak. Drats.

    Good at ya Sam.

  • Yeah, this flamed stuff just started showing up in mine about 3 months ago or so. I've got a neck made from 3 laminated pieces that's still waiting for a build to go on.
