I have a new project in mind and it is a very slim contraption and will need to be electric, I have a soap bar pickup which I would like to fit in line with the stings as opposed to across them as normal, the question is will it work?

The pickup has 2 bar magnets inside and 6 screws which pass through the case and between the magnets the screw heads are visible.

Next question the pickup is supplied with a single shielded cable, how do I connect this to the jack via a volume pot? I am sure its been covered before but a nidge in the right direction would be appreciated.

  • See if you have room to do a slant mount with two screws per string. That could be an awesome sound.
  • You can try going across the neck at various angles, trying to get the screws to cover all of the strings. I am thinking it is a six string pickup and you have less than six strings. You can adjust the srews up and down to even out the irregularities. The purpose of the screws is to extend the magnetic field, up closer to the strings, if one or more strings seems to be underperforming.
    • Thanks for the reply, yes the pickup is a six string type (6screws) and I will have 3 strings another option would be to fit a 3 string single coil pick up I suppose.
  • 1. Putting the pickup in line will not work well. The idea is to pick up the movment of all of the strings to give that full sound. You will be lining up all of the screws under one or two strings. The outer strings will be somewhat dead.

    2. If I understand you correctly, there is is single insulated wire inside the insulation cover but that nsulated is wire covered with a braided wire sheath. If so, that braided wire sheath doubles as both sheild and ground. The inside wire is the hot wire.
    • Hi
Thanks for the reply I did think it would not work well in line with the strings it's no problem I can mount it in the correct orientation it just would have looked neater.

Yes correct the wire has a braided sheath I assumed this would be the ground with the centre wire the hot wire, thanks for the confirmation
