Ok I search around and couln't find a definative answer on this so here goes....I am looking to use a slider type volume control for a CB amp and i have some that came out of a old radio and I asume that the wiring would be the same....I left them intacked the way they were in the original radio before i try to use them...the posts are numbered 1 & 2 on the left and 3 and 4 on the right top to bottom...do i need the resistor or can i scrap them...how would these word if i wanted to use them for a gain as well....

Two volume, one tone? That's odd, I would expect it to be the other way round in a radio and from the pictures. Usually radio controls are volume, treble, bass in a three slider setup.

If I were to hazard a guess I would say the top control is volume, the middle control is treble and the bottom control is bass.

I would leave the caps and resistors. Those are acting as bandpass filters in the tone circuits.

You'll need to figure out the hookups according to the schematics of the amp you intend to use.

this came out of an old 8 track that had 2 speakers, the volume controls for left and right speakers

You can loose the resistors and caps and use the sliders as regular pots. First off you should find out their value and see if they are close enough to use in your circuit. The resistors and caps are sized for the circuit they came from and may not work for you.

the caps that are on there are labeled 473 and i would have to look up the resistors. i tried running a test with my meter but it kept maxing the needle out the way i was doing it....i guess i will just try them out and see what happens

Sliding potentiometers are just like the round ones in how they work, just a little more expensive. Get your meter and measure their resostance if you need more Search eBay for 'sliding potentiometer'
