Hey all, I picked up a Seymour Duncan Woody pickup some time ago now figuring I could use it for something or another at some point. I'd have to dig it out to verify, but recall it to be the single coil version.

I have a build in the works the will be using a Elmar Flatpup and another still in the planning stages. The latter is going to be a unconventional approach to a resonator using a old floor vent cover (I think that's what it is, anyway) found a while back also.

In my brainstorming, I'm entertaining the notion of under mounting the Woody to the underside of the of the metal vent but unsure what the results might be.

Anybody ever use one of these for a CBG or have any thought as to whether under mounting one of these would work well or not?  I have other options, but this would be slick if it would actually work.

Thanks, RC

  • I did a pick up 2-3mm under my Bug radio tin cover that resonates as the top vibrates to make it work... sounds kinda interesting and its nowhere near the strings.

It needs to be close but not too close and the toip needs to vibrate quite a bit lost of flex...

..(thats if I havent completely missunderstood ya question which is highly likely)

    • and the top needs to be steel or ferrous...

      • Hey Bug, It's steel to be sure. I was thinking about mounting a mag. pickup under the "vent cover" but securing it so the top of the pickup would be in direct contact underside.   You think there should be a gap between the two, eh?  I  would imaging that would allow for more ability to actually resonate like you say.

The way I plan on installing it, it should be pretty easy to try it both ways to see what works better.  I'm hoping for both, but between the mag pup and a Piezo bridge,  hopefully one or the other will sound good.

  • I love that metal thing, what ever it is, just begging to be reso plate!

    • It's even got already built in sound holes!  Ya gotta love it, right.

Even if it doesn't work as planned, it will look cool anyway ;)

      • That thing looks great! Definitely go for it, as long as you're gonna use steel strings I reckon it'll be fine. Does it have a ring to it if you hold it at a corner and tap it? If it rings a bit you're on to a winner!

        • It does and actually has a nice ring to it. I did the tap test when I first found it and a a bit surprised to hear it ring out like it did because of it's shape.  Not as much as a bowl type but I think it's gonna work just fine.

          • Get cracking on it then so we can have a listen when its done!

            • Ha! Well, it's one build finish away.  I still need to finish the one I'm working on right now. The neck is a month + in the making. My free time (as for most) is split between hobby and more pressing matters so it's more like a trudge than a "get cracking" ;)  Getting close but not there yet. The rest should go pretty quickly after I finish the neck.

I'm looking forward to getting this one done and on to the resonator so I can hear what it sounds like, though.

  • I have just finished a resonator ukulele build, just waiting on the strings. I had the same idea as you, I used a dog bowl resonator and a steel soundboard (its pretty punky) and wound a pickup using a ring magnet and about 3000 winds then fitted it under the dog bowl, about 1cm away from the metal. I've had it amped up and put my other ukulele on the bridge and played a tune and its sounds brilliant, keeps that weird reso tone but very warm as well. I say go for it dude! Also make sure the metal of the floor vent is magnetic if not you need to glue/screw a piece of magnetic metal or a strip magnet above where the pickup will be mounted or it wont work.

Let us know how it comes out as well, I reckon this is the future of reso builds as people are always complaining about how hard it is to amp these things up with microphones and contact mics. I'll post up some sound of mine as soon as the strings arrive so you can have a listen.
