Has any one used one of these boxes, or another rough sawn box?  It has a lot of loose fiber on the outside that looks really cool, but I'm not sure how comfortable it will be to hold/play.  Any tips or advice for using such a box?  I plan to use a magnetic pickup since the top wood is rather thick.

Top right box in this pic.

I have a few of the rough box's also. I was thin king of lightly sanding the top, just enough to get rid of some of the splintery stuff but still leave the cool look. But my suggestion would be use the Padron box's, they have a fantastic sound.

Thanks Michael.  I had the same thoughts.  On both counts.  I probably have half a dozen of those Padron boxes now and I've yet to use one.

Those Padrons cost me $3 each, the Punch was $1 and the red one from a different shop was $5.  I don't know why I paid that much, but I haven't used or collected a red box yet, so I spent a few extra bucks of someone else's money.  :)

Yes I have used these boxes a number of times with very good results. I have done them as straight acoustics and like the one in the picture as resonators.  I did buzz the surface with a quick sanding to knock off some of the fuzz and went at it.  That does Look like a nice score of boxes should all end up as instruments.
Jim, thanks for the pic. Looks sweet! Just the sort of inspiration I was looking for. I figured the sanding would bring out the natural wood color deeply accented by the black.

Is that the original lid, or have you added a new piece of ply?

Good looking build. What did you use for the reso?

I actually finished this build and it went to John Anderson, He plays in the band McMule. (New York City)  The cones I use come from Frank at Republic Guitars. Frank is a great guy tell him I sent you.  FYI I hear all the time about National cones and I have thought about using them but to tell you the truth most of the guys that buy my builds are pro or semi pro they like the sound, and since Frank supports CBG builders I want to support him. (Just like Getty). Okay sorry more information then you wanted I know.

 E. D - I build my stuff backwards (that way the artwork is intact, It was an idea of Keni Lee that I stuck with)  This is one of the process pictures so I still needed to finish the raw wood.

Very nice Jim.  Thanks for sharing the tips.  Great looking guitar.
The Edge, thats the box I have. Nice job Jim
Thanks Michael I have built 3 of them and they all sound really nice. I built one of these for myself after this one went to New York (not one of my better pictures) this one has different f- holes and a straight headstock with Grover tuners. You guys are going to get sick of looking at these.
Never happen, I can always look at quality work.
