Hi Cigar Box Builders

I am looking to purchase a budget priced resonator 4 string CBG that is similar ish to the one attached

For two reasons:

1) to play and enjoy

2) to deconstruct and see how it is done!

Anyone ever made one and would like to construct?

Ideally it would have sound control on the box too.

Please send quote and estimated time it would take.

Thanks and have a good day

Adam

I agree William, whilst I understand Colombia Lobon's request I cannot for the life of me imagine anyone parting with their creation knowing that the person purchasing is intending to reverse engineer it & destroy it in the process. Marks reso way too good for this and I would suggest that any instrument that someone is selling that cheap is likely not going going to be constructed well enough to learn from anyway.

CL,

Just my tuppence, but from looking at the pic, I'd estimate the hardware cost alone is upwards of $50. I understand why you want to purchase a cheap reso, but in the original CBG spirit, why not try building your own from scratch, since you seem willing to deconstruct someone else's work to do just that? "Home Made Resonator Boxes 101, v.2.0" "How loud can we make it?" and "Super Advanced Cigar Box Building" are the 3 most active discussion Groups where Resonator CBGs are concerned, and there is lots of free help available there for your own build if you can't find anyone willing to sell you a reso for under $100. Tuna cans, dog bowls, license plates, salad / mixing bowls - anything can be a resonator, it doesn't have to look like a 1930s National. Heck, Seasick Steve makes his own jangle boxes, he's pushing 70, and the latest of his I saw recently was two hub caps mounted on a broomstick! Cheap, funky, and soulful.

Only reason I say this is that after searching around for "cheap" CBGs on eBay, and contacting John McNair, I realized
that I, too, could build a CBG. That's what led me to this wonderful site. Check out some of barefoot cajun's homemade reso's. The guy is amazing in what he can create a playable instrument from.

Hi Oilyfool

Many thanks for your response - and some helpful tips

Reso's do go on ebay for anywhere between 50-400
Will check out the links you mentioned

Have you built one yourself?

CL,

Nope, you've caught me out! ;-) A reso is down the road, after I finish my next 10 or so builds (specific gifts for specific people over the next few months). I'm just offering completely unsolicited, secondhand advice from / for people that have actually done it :-).

Because those will be the people I consult when I DO get around to building one. But I understand, I think, the conceptual aspects of building a reso, and am pretty sure, being somewhat handy with hand and power tools, that I can translate those into something workable / fun to play.

BTW, your handle has me curious, because my mother is from Bogota: how / why Colombia Lobon?
