Hi Ani.  I soaked them in warm soapy water (i have 8 boxes) and then scraped the paper off with finger nails and a small kitchen knife.

However, now the next step is to get the glue off. I hear nail polish remover will do it.

and then........ when it's dry, sand with rough paper and wipe off with wet/damp cloth.

and then....... when that's dry, sand with fine paper and brush off with dry paint brush.

    and then........ paint the insides.

and then........ when dry, paint the bottom and one side of the lids.

and then....... when dry, pain the other side of the lids and the outsides.

Since I only have tme on the weekend, my big question is............... How many weeks is this going to take?

All the instructions I read make it sound like a quick project, but it obviously isn't.

    Thanks, Pam

  • I managed to remove the paper covering from the cigar box! = )
I got as much off as i could by peeling, then i used warm water and washing up liquid trying not to get it too wet. then it just came off with a little bit of scraping.

    Thanks for your help everyone

  • Hey Ani, i havent tried it on boxes but WD-40 works great for removing glue residue. spray on the paper and let sit a min or two to soften the glue underneath.
  • For getting rid of the smaller labels that won't peel off or the gummy residue that's left after you remove a label, , I keep a little bottle of "hand sanitizer" around. It's actually mostly alcohol.
  • Thanks everyone for your help.

Thanks for the advice, looks like i am going to be busy!
  • Thanks Wade
  • Some labels can be removed with heat and a lot of patience. Heat up with a heat gun or hair dryer, let it cool slightly and peel. I use plastic razor blades for this. You might also try a large paint remover scraper-. I've learned the hard way that sometimes it's easier to go with what the box already is. If it is tattered go with an old primative look. If you want new and modern, spend 2 or 3 bucks and get a new box. It will save you lots of time and frustration that way!
