When I found this site I thought I would build one or two guitars and move on to something else. But, I've seen some wildly creative instruments on this site that have provided me with a constant source of inspiration. Now I'm 30 instruments in and still going strong.

I think it would be fun to post pictures of the builds the we're the most proud of.

Don't feel limited to guitars. I've seen some homemade jigs, tools, drum kicks, and lots of other things that're both artistic and marvels of backyard engineering.

So lets each post one pick that's the best of what we've designed and built.

Drool

How is this played? On the lap, like a lap steel, or more like a regular guitar? Is this your own design or is there historical precedence? It seems almost medieval to me.

It is my version of a Weissenborn lap guitar. Here is a sample of one being played, it is a different body shape but played the same. Here

Pretty spiffy sound. Thanks for the link. It is playing right now.

Without a doubt.

Eric, what tuning & strings do you use on your 5 string builds?

Open G - GDgbd

Keef style.  It is great tuning since you get

151 GDg

513 Dgb - Keni Lee's Devil Tuning

5135 Dgbd Banjo Tuning

1513 GDgb Typical 4-string tuning

All are easy to isolate with 513 being the most difficult, but not inaccessible.  5 strings and 5 common tuning voices/chord shapes and advantages.  It is very easy to just play GDg to play shuffle rhythms, etc.

I forgot to mention the strings.  It varies.  Tuning is always GDGbd

Bendy are Ernie Ball Super Slinky ADgbe (The pink pack)  This would be a set of 9s. Strings 2-6 from the pack.

Slidy are Super Slinky EADgb I think this makes it like a set of 11s by bumping up one string. Strings 1-5 from the pack.

Resonator - Martin Bluegrass Medium Electric Resonator (56-16).  I don't use the 56.  GDg are 46, 36, 26w then I think it is 18 for the b and 16 for the d.

that is awesome!!

This is my favorite guitar. It has super hot pickups and it always blows people away when they play it for the first time.

I wondered that happened to my '54 Chevy, that was my first car.
