  • I use one of those too, but have had better luck with the piezos, at least as far as home recording is concerned (I haven't tried them through an amp yet, just pluged directly into my Mac). I have found EQ adjustment an absolute plus!

You guys all rock. I had to do an out of town show at a horror convention this weekend so I haven't gotten to radio shack yet. Been using my dean markley stick-on magnetic pick up in the meantime and it sounds amazing!

  • I just got 50 for 20€ (20mm). Have not soldered one ou yet, but will do soon.

You can get them at Pollin.de dirt cheap, and they are really good. But you have to be able to read German through the site.....
  • another good source is www.digikey.com
they have a variety that you can get for less than $ 1.20 wire attached.... less than $ 1.00 for quantities...
  • I bought twenty of them on Ebay for 7.95 plus shipping. I soldered them myself. They work like a charm and the price was really cheap. I would never pay more than 3.00 for one as they sell all day long at Radio Shack for that.
  • Here's the link to the Radio Shack model that is frequently used:

    http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062402

    Model: 273-073
    Catalog #: 273-073

$2.00 is hard to beat unless you need to buy them in bulk.

Here's the link for instructions of getting them out of their casings:

They sound better when taken out of the cases. Have some foam attached or encase them in thin wood or silicone for a better response. I often use thick pieces of double sided tape. Serves a dual purpose. The foam of the tape helps dampen the sound and you can also move it around to find the "sweet" spot you like.

    Hope this helps.
  • Look in the Best Deals Around forum. Lots of info on where to get piezo's and the average price is probably $2 to $4dollars.
  • American Science and Surplus looks like they have them for pretty cheap.

  • Not all the Radio Shacks have the Drawer cabinet full of pots and piezo's, You need to to find that one. I think you can look em up online to find the nearest one that has 'em

  • Hi,
Many people use the simple piezo buzzer/sounder/disc/piezo ceramic element which can be bought as a disc with wires so you don't have to break open any buzzer container.
I am from the UK and on UK ebay I have bought these in the past
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5-35mm-Piezo-Elements-Sounder-Sensor-Trigger-...
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5-27mm-Piezo-Elements-Sounder-Sensor-Trigger-...
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/5-20mm-Piezo-Elements-Sounder-Sensor-Trigger-...

or 1 of each size (this gives a little technical data).
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3801334986...

These work fine and cost well below the $20 lower limit. These ebay sellers ship to the USA.

If you search the forum for "piezo" you will find several topics and lots of information.

    Regards,
    David
