Piezo feedback...

I wired up a guitar for the first time with a piezo disc.  It doesn't sound too bad, but when I put the cord into the jack I get some feed back.  It is a humming sound.  If I put my hand onto the metal input where the cord goes into the jack the sound goes away.

Is there anything I can do to get rid of this humming sound all together?

  • Try insulating the disk with electricians tape, cover it front and back
  • I respectfully suggest it might be much more like an ugly buzzing sound than either a hum or feedback?

And 'the sound goes away..' Do you mean only the undesired 'feedback' or 'hum' (or as I suspect buzz?) or do you mean all sound? If all sound output disappears then you are somehow shorting the circuit with your body, if it suddenly works ok when you touch the jack connector then that's a much simpler thing connecting the ground to the strings will enable you to silence unwanted noise by touching those. You can do a bunch of stuff to bridge the ground to somewhere on your body, a bit of metal, wire in the back, in the strap etc etc
    • The buzz it what goes away, not all of the sound.

  • Make sure piezo is grounded to the Jack at ground terminal and if you are using a volume control it must also be grounded.

  • It sounds like a ground issue maybe check the wiring group for a diagram for a fix.
