What is the perfect string spacing measurement between strings for a fretless three string CBG that is meant to be played with a slide and also fretted?

Yep, I'm in the 1/2" club too. One thing came to mind here. JUJU does awesome work. He is also in the UK. They use the metric system that we just can't seem to get used to in the USA. Just make sure you guys are speaking the same measurement language.

I have exchanged several e-mails with JUJU. He does offer different string spacings in millimeters ( mm ). One inch equals 25.4 mm. I asked JUJU if he would make me a three string single coil pickup with a 12.5 mm string spacing and a walnut wood top. He said he could and this pickup will be for a three stringer with 1/2" string spacing.

I'm going to Pay Pal him some money in a day or two. All the audio clips of his pickups sound great. Lost Tone has some great videos using a CBG with a JUJU pickup in it.

Juju turned me on to 15mm string spacing - initially his pups came with the same spacing so I had to!

Iv had and used plenty of Jujus pups. I even keep a box full in stock for when a customer specifies one. You wont find anything even close in terms of warm tone.

By the way, all my necks are 45mm wide.

It's cool you say that JUJU's pickups have a warm tone because that is what I want.  I'm very impressed by the looks and sounds of JUJU's pickups and builds.  I have seen some custom guitars in my day, but some of his stuff is really different than anything I have ever seen before.  The Les Plank with a Jack Daniels mini bottle turned sideways for a bridge and the bottle is routed into the wood top with no gaps around it.  It's perfect routing which really impressed me because that was extremely hard to do.

Yup, the boy does good.

As it happens, the Les Plank 2 hangs on my wall.... :o)

I seen a picture of an incredible three string guitar a few months ago on here.  Just incredible looking and very original.  I was checking out your videos and you made it.  You called this build a Trytone.  You have some building chops of your own my friend.

The Trytone and Les Plank are works of art...

those skinny brit boys all build great, i think its the miserable climate there...

I wont make a stab at their cricket, as my guys STINK these days too :D good on ya Ben

Juju may well push a 15mm spacing but I'd very much doubt thats his spacing at the nut, he surely tapers his necks, the guys an engineering pimp.

re Mr Glaze's arguments about slides...  oh guys... u dont build the guitar to fit the slide!!  A slide can be cut to whatever you need..  I'd consider building a guitar to fit a slide a bit like having a family to fit the car..  A little backwards, no?  Also try to bear in mind, those stubby slides are DESIGNED to cover less than all the strings, its no shortcoming.

Glaze, no these necks don't move, I could add a string and be fine. They are black walnut also so hard and strong.

Your necks probably are not moving much if at all under the string tension on a three stringer with a 1 3/4" wide neck?  Sounds like a very stable neck to me.

3 strings spaced 1/2 apart would be 1" total width for all 3 strings. 4 strings would be 1 1/2".  My necks are 1 3/4" wide, I like the fit.
Just to add my two-penneth, mine are 14mm spacing with a 39mm neck (the neck was cut to 40mm and ended up at 39 after tidying and sanding). When I started I was probably most influenced by the Red Dog guitars so that's why the strings are near the edge. No problems playing it even for a beginner like me.

Yes, the weather probably keeps them in the woodshed longer.

John McNair (Red Dog) likes strings wide for delta bluesy slide work... many pickers like spacing more like conventional six stringers... I'm kinda in the middle... 9mm at the nut and 11mm at the bridge.... I tend to narrow the neck on  three stringers a little  unless it's going to be a slide instrument with high action,  tend 1 1 /2" wide is good enough.  The mentioned spacing works almost perfect on 4 stringers...

just some thoughts...

the best,

Wichita Sam

Just caught this - thanks mate, much appreciated :o)
