The mom of the kid I'm making a CBG for doesn't want it amplified. I've done some research and tinkered around, and I think the thinner bottom of the box I'm going to use would make the tone/volume better for acoustic. Therefore, I'll attach the neck through and connect it to the bottom, not the top, of the cigar box.

Of course, the bottom of the box is plain ugly, just wood with a few stamps on it. If I paint it, would the paint enhance, limit, or do nothing to the volume? I once had a painted cardboard dulcimer from Backyard Music, and it was pretty loud...

A thin coat of paint should make not much difference at all.  IMO!

Will painting it affect the sound? Yes. Will you notice the difference? Probably not.

Go for it.

I'll give it a go -- thanks you all!

Completely depends on the paint color, nothing else.

Black will make it grind like AC / DC.
Red will make it rock like post-Roth Van Halen.
Yellow will make it sound like Cheap Trick at Budokan.
Tobacco sunburst will make it sound exactly like Robert Johnson's 1932 Gibson (trust me on this one).
White will make it sound almost identical to a Gretsch White Falcon.
Green will make it play nothing but surf music.
Light blue will make robins crap on it in the springtime.
Pink will make him give it to his little sister (listen to her scream!)

Leaving it natural will give it a warm, mellow tone that his mom will learn to loathe when the kid starts playing slide.

It's all in the color. Really.

Maybe I should go for a rainbow assortment so it makes a really melodious din stew?

Thanks  :)

Naahhh, that would be g...orgeous.
