I have recently built two cbgs, 1 fretted and 1 without. On my fretted CBG I originally had bronze wrapped strings but found them too stiff for my elderly fingers, and changed them to nickel strings. I now find that my high G string seems to be ringing when picked both open and fretted. The action seems ok but I’m at a loss to find the cause. Can anyone help?

Try adding a string tree to that string at least . (you can test if it will work with the side of a screwdriver shaft. just apply some downward pressure on the string behind the nut , and see if it stops . if so . add a tree (or screw with a small washer , or eye-screw , or string clip . or ... yadda yadda yadda .
Ok, one last suggestion, shim your bolt a bit higher and see if the extra down pressure from the strings helps. Its only guess work when one does not have the guitar.

Hi Michael, if the string is clearing all the frets I would suggest two places to look first.
If you changed string gauge and have slots in your bridge, the string may be buzzing in a too wide a slot. Also do you have enough break angle at the bridge?
The other could be something in or on the guitar resonating.

Thanks for your response. I use a threaded bolt for my bridge and everything seems ok and I’ve tried moving the bolt laterally to use new threads. I’m also happy with the slot in the nut which is bone. I do have mesh grills in my sound holes, but the ringing is still present if I put pressure on them while picking the string. My box lid is also fastened down well. Might try another gauge of string.
