I have seen all kinds of things used for fret markers: nails, screws, bullet casings, etc.

If the neck is fretted, I would think that buzzing should not be an issue since pressing the string down causes the string to strike the top of the fret before it touches the fretboard. I would use standard wood screws and countersink them so they sit down flush.

yeah that was my thought but i found this random video and this guy said it was buzzing because the screws . i figured it was fret buzz but it shyed me away for a second . thank you for the second opinion Dan . i can continue with this guitar now lol .

I just countersink the screws lower then the fretboard

If you want the flush, seamless look, you could countersink them like Dan and Randy said and then fill them on top with some clear epoxy. Then, sand it level, and clean it up. Here are some on a fretless (but only slide so they are truly just markers).

Here on my "  Amish Harp "  the washboard build, I used brass screws on the fret board. I used a 25" scale length on the neck and made 2 different fret boards. One with dulci fretting and one with regular guitar fretting. Using the screws as fret markers allows me to switch the fret boards to have two different instruments on one neck.
