Neck Heel

Hi All! Yup I have questions again...trying to take the time to do this properly...  I have reclaimed barn wood American Chestnut to be exact. The wood is limited to what I have on hand.

My question is: I have the neck roughed and am considering the heel.

Do I keep the heel of my neck as thick as possible for better resonance?

My Undercrown box is only 9 3/8" L x 6 1/2 W not a lot of extra body for resonance.

As always thank you for any input! Keep building.

  • On commercial 6 string acoustic guitars and on  viols (violin shaped - violin, viola, cello, double bass) , the heel is important for a stiff mounting of the neck to the side of the body and so covers the entire side. that way the instrument doesn't fold itself in half when tuned up.

  • Hmm... I've I not considered resonance or sustain in relation to necks. My criteria has only been strength. Looking forward hearing opinions on this.
