i stained my poplar neck with minwax red mahogany stain the other day and i left it on a bit to long. it came out really dark. i was thinking of using mineral spirits to take the stain off and then i would stain it again and leave the stain on for less time. has anyone tried this with good results? or just a way to lighten it up with out taking much of the wood off? i burned the frets in and theyre not very deep so i would prefer not to re burn them.

  • Hey JJ,

I love Minwax's Red Mahogany. I had a situation similar to this. I had actually left the stain on for only about 45 minutes and it was already gummy to the point I could not rub it of with a dry towel.

Sure enough the mineral spirits thinned it out enough that I was able to remove alot of it.

Since yours has been a couple of days most likely it is still not fully cured. I would definately give the mineral spirits a try. I think it will remove a decent amount.
