Being a newbie (at 76) I was wanting to build a Piezo and a Magnetic P/U  to see the difference.

With spare parts available, I was wondering if one had to use a 3 pole P/U for a 3 string and a

4 pole P/U for 4 string etc. or if even a large P/U for a 6 string could be used for lesser strings.

Also thoughts on comparing the two types of pickups...

  • You can make a 'dummy coil extender' and hide a six pole pup under it ;)
    • I've heard you mention this quite a few times Kid, and it makes sense but I've never seen it in practice. Do you have a pic?

  • Hi Bill. You can definitely use a 6 pole pup for 3 or 4 strings. Lots of people do it. Myself and quite a few others wind our own and therefore will only use as many magnets as strings.
    • Tnx Richey.  I had seen some builds with a large pup and only 3 or 4 strings but

thought I better confirm that. My first will be piezo for that matter but would like

      to try a magnetic later.

      • Sounds sensible Bill. Get your acoustic sound where you want it first before stepping down the mag pup rabbit hole, there's no return :)
