Can someone tell me what kind of "volume" knob I need to use for a pickup and a peizo....all seperate of course.  What is a pot? and what is the difference between a pot and a volume knob.....and do I need to be using a variable resistor with these kind of aplications other than a volume knob? I bought a volume kbob from radio shack and have never had any luck with it, it just stays the same volume with anything I try it with, it just turns up more static for me.

  • This is all good stuff.....thanks guys. I have had experince with variable resisors in the past hooking up cpu fans to paintball masks....but this volume knowb I bought at radio shack seems like it does nothing like the variable resistor....I wish I kept the package now to know what the heck it is..I might pick up a VR this week and toy with it. I just wrapped a pickup this morning with 8 new button magnets from wall mart, and a bunch of turns with some green enamel flower wire....the stuff they use to wire flowers with.....with my pedal it works pretty well. It might be the heart of my next build.
  • Hi Jerry,

This link gives a good overview of pots used with guitars

This link shows how to wire them upto piezos

  • a pot is short for a potentiometer, basicaly just a variable resistor. a knob is the thing you attack to the shaft of the pot to make it easier ot grip and look better.
  • Simple potentiometers from Radio Shack will do BUT you will get more responses saying 250K or 500K or 1K or 1M or something in that arena. I've used RS potentiometers and they work fine -- especially for piezo's.

Else go on ebay or to your local guitar store and get some pots. I got some this weekend for $6.
