it has been about 2 or 3 years since I was last on here.  with running my own business never had time to bother with cbg's.  now that I've finally retired at the age of 70 going onto 71 in a months time. now I'm having to learn what was lost  inactivity if you understand what I mean. still got a lot of wooden necks/ solid bodies/tins  tuners etc. I want to make a couple of solid bodied guitars for my two grand son's before I go through the pearly gates. also for myself to pick up where I left off.. I want something simple beside slide. in the picture can some one point me in the right direction. it look like dulcimer but with a little less frets. what are the position of these frets in the picture?

I think this may be what you’re looking for?

https://www.cigarboxguitar.com/knowledge-base/diatonic-dulcimer-fre...

That is a Dulcimer, just smaller. The fret locations of the guit in the pic are at the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th & 9th frets of the scale, called a Diatonic scale, it basically follows the notes of the Major scale if that helps? You can use any scale length as long as you follow the Diatonic scale fret placement? If the lads have small hands then use a 21”/533mm-23”/584mm scale length, otherwise use a 24”/609mm-25”/635mm fret scale if they’re regular sized? Welcome back & cheers :)

It’s been awhile, things have changed :)

thanks. got that sorted. my two grandsons age as follows 1,7 and the other just over a year old.

I'll make for the 7 year old to play (nylon strings) and a better one for when he gets older.
