input jacks short.

I am sure that there is another thread on this, but was not sure what to search for. But do they make 1/4 inch jacks that have a longer thread to them. I have tried to now and they seem to be almost the same length as the width of the side of the box. I have been able to counter sink and get it to fit. But was just wondering if I am missing something.

    Everyone thank you so much for the helpful advice. To be honest I was not expecting so much feedback. But these are all great ideas. I have just gotten into doing CBG's and this gives me so many new ideas on to work out the next build. I am so happy that I signed up for this forum. Everyone here is so helpful and willing to provide advice. thanks again everyone.

    A jack plate whether purchased or homemade is your friend.

    It reinforces the box, can be mounted for a recessed or projecting jack, allows one to use whatever jack is handy, and just generally cuts out all the faffing about. :D

      Where is the preferred location for placing the jack? I put some on the front  and some on the end. I know these CBGs don't have standards but what is the best for most. I try to match the flow of the box whether acoustic/electric or straight electric.

        The preferred location is...wherever you prefer. And no, I'm not being facetious. Some people install them in the top of the box, like a Strat. Others (many, I think) install them in the lower end of the box, like some LP styles. I've even seen a few on the upper edge of the box facing the player, and one installed in the neck end of the box, next to the heel. Right handed players typically like them down low to the right in the box end; flip it for lefties. A ver few use the combo jack / strap button in the center edge of the box, like many acoustic-electrics, which provides better balance. The choice is up to you, and the needs of the player.

    You will find that where you locate the jack will make a difference.

    The end panels of boxes tend to be thicker than the lids/backs. If you install the jack on the end, you may still wind up needing to countersink it even if you use the longer shafted jacks.

      I like doing this as a Jack can be replaced later. Another advantage is you can use brass washers, polished stainless, etc.

    Go to CBGitty.com and look for the Neutrik jacks. They have a 9mm shaft on them and are plenty long for most boxes.

      Thank you do much sir and for the link. that helps me so much. I knew there was a reason that i signed up for this site. I ave built two far and I am totally hooked now. :)
