So I MASSIVELY over tuned my lowest (thickest) string and broke it. I ended up replacing all 3 strings (bronze, I think, to Nickel) and the gears on the tuning pegs as well (in fact, 1 full peg). However, i think I may have watped my neck in this whole process because i can tune the guitar to open GDG, but as soon as I press down a string, it's no longer in tune. For example, when playing D @ 2-0-2, the 2s are in tune with each other (though themselves a little sharp), but are now not in tune with the 0 like they should be. It's a mess.

Anyone understand my problem and have a solution?

Yep make a new neck .

You've changed a lot of things at once (bronze to nickel, tuner gears, tuner). Slow down just a bit and take stock of what you have and what "might" have happened.

First, what makes you think the neck is warped? If you lay a straight edge down the neck is there a big bow?

Second. Tune to open G and check the intonation. Is every note in tune (but an octave higher) at the 12th fret?

Third: what kind of action height do you have? If it is too high then notes will go sharp when you fret them. If the bridge is not adjusted to give accurate intonation, then the problem of high action only gets worse.

There is a lot you can do before ripping your guitar apart and carving a new neck. Check the above items and see what you have.

Tom T, I don't think the intonation is correct. The notes are about the same at the 12th fret, but at the 5th fret, the C-G-C are all sharp.

I don't understand action height, I'm sorry. I don't think that should have changed though?

Tom hit it on the head

Intonation - moving the bridge away from the nut a little bit and at a slant (look at acoustic guitars)  to compensate for the fact that when you fret a string you are stretching it tighter to get it down to the fingerboard.

action height - how far above the frets are the strings.  the more space between the string and the fret, the more you stretch the string tighter to press it down.

So what do you have for a bridge on this one and did anything about the bridge or the nut change when you put new strings on it?

Bolts and I don't think so?

as the others said , it sounds like your bridge bolt has moved.or it needs to be adjusted because of the different strings you are using.

One other thought. If you are using an electronic tuner, make sure it is on the "C" (Chromatic) scale. It's easy to hit the button and change to a different scale without noticing. The result is weird tuning.....

Pics would help...

I also recommend checking the neck to body attachment area. If it's glued it might have pulled loose

Intonation, nut height, and bridge position likely need adjusted, google Justin Johnson on how to set up intonation for cigar box guitar.  He has a video that describes all of this set up very well.

If intonation is good after adjusting the bridge to suit the 12th fret to open and the 5th fret is out it may be a nut placement  intonation problem. Action height is the other thing to fix.

Problem solved. Wrong gauge strings.
