So, question for fellow builders. Has anyone attempted to build a hybrid, a la Charlie Hunter? He is known for his hybrid builds (like a 7 string with 4 electric/3 bass strings). I was looking into something along the lines of a 4 string (3 electric/ 1 bass) but not too familiar with bass scale lengths. Is there a scale length that would work for both electric and bass with regard to fret positions? I know bass scale lengths tend to be longer than an electric guitar scale. Thanks in advance!

  • lots  to consider  with bass strings .  , extra  neck support , truss rod or not , stronger wood choice,   scale, string gauge,    bass pickup , even a  a bass amp  need consideration  .    etc etc etc . bass strings add a bunch  more  string pressure than  regular guits ,adding  much more consideration  in other areas . ---

As a "safer" alternative  , you  can get away  with a 2 to 4   stringer  short scale bass / hybrid     , using  the fat  strings  from a special drop d guitar  string pack  . they will still  fit the  regular tuners  , and  a good piece of oak will  be  sufficient for a  regular 25.5  scale through neck  (which is still within  a bass conversion scale too). (actually  some folks convert their regular teles  to a shortscale bass ). you can add your 1 bass to a regular  3 stringer  and still use the same pickup  and not worry  too much about murdering your "guitar" amp speaker too .

    (i've done a couple that way )  2 and 3 stringers basses  .
