  • Folks, this warms my heart. A thirteen year old is looking for tips and advise on building his own guitar! This to me is what this site is all about.

First of all a big welcome Chris, I assure you that these people and I would love to help you out any way we can!

A prefab neck six stringer is fairly ambitious, but you are doing the right thing by thinking this through and studying the concept before proceeding too far.

If you study some of the pictures and builds in the six string group you might find some good tips. Also, if you download and study Josh's guide from the above links, I think you will find some answers on box construction and reinforcement. There is a little woodworking involved, and the accuracy of your work will define the results of your efforts. I am betting you can not only do it, but wow us if you just continue to study and think, and be patient and take your time!

Whatever you do, plan ahead and draw some sketches. Measure and calculate.

The most important thing to consider on a pre-fab or re-used neck build is that you must use the correct (original) length from nut to bridge to make it work. Most boxes are a little short to pull this off without some thought and planning, as the original body is typically so much bigger. You will find examples of what I mean in the mentioned photos and Josh's book.

Good luck, cant wait to see your progress!

  • Hi,

Here is a previous discussion that might help

    http://www.cigarboxnation.com/group/6stringcigarboxguitars/forum/to...

If you look at my page photos all are based on recycled guitar necks (I find fretting necks really boring)

  • am i allowed to bump/

  • if your going for an electric six string solid body type guitar then you would use a solid block of wood to fill the cigar box, and rout or chisel the block of wood accordingly.

check out the Jim Frets videos also, he has several, cake pan reso, solid body etc.

  • actully that definetly helps but what do  =i do for box reinforcement.

  • kk but if anyone has anything a little less above my head that would be cool too. thanks fer the help. btw i like meat pie.

  • Its a neck that Josh makes but all the concepts of mating it to the box are the same for a prefab and hand made neck. Connecting a prefab six string neck to a CB are very similar to how you would do it on a solid body guitar.
