I thought about making my own bone slide, but don't know how to do it. Does anyone know of any resources? How did you make yours? For other slides, I thought about tubing or pipes, with felt with adhesive backing. What are other common materials? Thanks.

    • wow there is some beautiful work here.. lots of talent for sure..

  • Oooo-ooooo, that smell.  Can't you smell that smell.

The amount of time I imagine it takes to get a nice slide surface from bone is not worth the smell you have to endure, even when wearing a respirator and dust collection.  The funk sticks to your clothes and whatever building you are doing the work in until all the dust is dissipated.  Yuck.

Mojobone Works is one alternate to making your own.  I make my own nuts and and saddles, but that's about my personal limit.  Randy does beautiful work on the slides and more decorative bridges.

About the lowest cost slide is a steel spacer from a home improvement store like Lowes.  They are under $3 ea.  http://www.lowes.com/pd_136462-37672-880423_0__?productId=3012328  They have a nice tone and a little heavy.  Not as heavy as a 3/4" socket, but still may take some exercise to play a longer session.

    • Yes the smell of burning bone is yuk puke..   I have like you BF,, made my own nuts and saddles out of cow bone and that's about it.. dust goes everywhere and on everything.. guess I'll just wait and see, maybe someday make a slide but have to be outside to work on it.. 5 ft of snow on my deck is a bit much right now..lol

  • Good thing about bone is you can cut and glue it as well. A good CA glue works. This is a project on my list, just haven't gotten to it yet.
  • I have a couple of wine glass slides I cut.  glass is hard to cut and come out shiny and new, but you can make a decent one anyway. I don't really like them due to the top where the stopper /cork was.. I bought a glass one couple of weeks ago at local guit shop.. Like it the best so far.

Also have a copper one that I picked up at HD.. just a copper connector. Its quite nice but a bit too big.

A bone one would be neat.. guess the problem would be getting it nice and round. would depend on what piece of bone you get I guess. guess a lot of grinding and sanding might work.
