  • I made one a couple years ago and thought I posted a thread about it, can't find it. I do have pics of the build process if your interested. Here's a link to a build thread I posted on the TDPRI Guitar Forum if that helps.

  • Mine started off as a banjo build.  I followed a youtube video by rpeek called "how to make a gas can banjo".

But I didn't have an old banjo neck (as is suggested in the videos) so I used a 1x2 cbg neck.  And...that didn't really work for a banjo, so I converted it to 4 string electric guitar.

I don't have any pictures of the build process, but I recall some solutions I had to come up with:

I had to eyeball a slight neck angle on the neck thru design and it required cutting and overlapping a section of the 1x2 and creating a heel to get that to work.   I anchored the neck to the handle side of the can using some angle bracket/heel anchors from cbgitty.

Then I had to cut out the bottom of the can in order to construct some bracing under the bridge (the aluminum can will crush into itself under string tension) and cut a new bottom out of a cigar box lid. I used a large bolt thru the bottom of the can to anchor that end of the neck.

I mounted a flat humbucker pickup to the top and used a bolt for the bridge/saddle.

Turned out pretty good, I think:
