I saw a link on here somewhere about homemade /handmade tuning pegs....now I can't find it....if anyone could post it on here that would be awesome. Also, if there is anyone that has made their own tuning pegs, any advice would be great, how they work, how well they stay in tune, how to make them....that would be awesome, Then I can really start building from scratch.

  • Has anybody used zither tuning pins for a cbg?
  • I got a set of machine heads off of ebay for $15 (US). And that was for 6. Hand made sounds like you need serious wood working skills, which I know i dont have, but that's how they do it on a violin.
  • Thanks for the info guys......this really helps...i am just geting tired of going to the music store in town and asking for only three machine heads and the guy behind the counter looking at me funny....plus his prices are pretty high....10 bucks for just 3 tuning machine heads....they are really nice machine heads, but he is always trying to sell me 6 at a time, which is fine, but he always wants at least 30 bucks for 6 of them......I wish they made a eye bolt with a hole through it. I have tried to drill them out, but it's hard to drill thorugh the threads....maybe I will grind them down and then drill through them......hmmmm...I see a test project coming on this week.
  • I've made the old style tuning pegs in the past.I have a fretless wood top banjo I built a year or so ago that I used wood pegs I made.It will tune but it does take more time.I wont bother doing any anymore because to me their more trouble that their worth.
There should be plenty of info on the web about how to shape and get them to work. They have to be tapered to get them to work right.
  • I've got one going where I'm using the ole eye bolts for pegs. I've heard many people say they don't stay in tune too well, and are a real bitch to tune (like you gotta use a screwdriver). We'll see in a few days...

I remember that link, too man. I should bookmarked it. Typically I'll bookmark great discussions so I can find 'em easier later.
